Trout
Season is just starting in Kiwi Country
With the latest economic down turn there is some good new for
US anglers, the New Zealand dollar has dropped in value. This
makes Kiwi fishing far more affordable than six months ago.
In this newsletter we are featuring Back
Country Trout which operates on the South Island in New
Zealand, two hours south of Christchurch. They can be a solo
destination but more often Back Country fits as part of a broader
New Zealand fly fishing vacation. They are flexible on length
of stay as well as arrival and departure days. Owner
and head guide Kevin Payne is a registered New Zealand professional
fishing guide specializing in sight casting for wild brown and
rainbow trout. You will love his personalized service and itineraries,
casting to large trout on un-crowded rivers, while in the middle
of striking scenery.
Being guided is the best way to maximize your fishing time while
in the South Island. This region boasts a mix of spring creeks,
freestone rivers and large braided glacial rivers. Local and
back country rivers are accessible by 4WD without the need or
extra expense of a helicopter. The trout fly fishing season
runs from October 1 - April 30. A guided day on the river includes
all equipment and flies, riverside lunch and transport via comfortable
4WD. They
have additional guides available to guide larger groups.
Back Country Trout specializes in making an itinerary tailored
to suit you as well as your fishing and non-fishing interests.
The region has much to offer the non-angler: horseback riding,
river rafting, winery tours, arts and crafts, Maori rock art,
museums, gardens, etc. Trips can start from the airport or hotel
in Christchurch or you can arrive by car. Accommodations range
from top quality Bed & Breakfasts, lodges and farm stays
and even a shepherd's hut right on the river. Their favorite
farm stay, All Seasons Lodge, offers both cooked breakfast and
a three course dinner. Each room has its own ensuite bath and
a view of the mountains and countryside. There is a spa and
pool surrounded by lovely gardens. They cater to anglers and
the extended fly fishing day.
